Thinking about learning crochet but not sure where to start? You do not need a giant kit, years of experience or perfect hands. Crochet starts with one hook, one strand of yarn and a little practice.

What is crochet?

Crochet is a craft made by pulling loops of yarn through other loops using a single hooked tool. That simple action can eventually become keychains, flowers, bags, amigurumi, baby pieces, home décor and much more.

For a beginner, the best part is that you can see progress quickly. You can make a chain within your first practice session and start building small projects once the basic movements feel natural.

What do you need to start?

  • A comfortable crochet hook
  • Beginner-friendly yarn
  • A small pair of scissors
  • A yarn needle for finishing

You do not need to buy every hook size or every colour. Start with one yarn and a hook that feels comfortable in your hand. If you want help choosing materials, explore the StickyKnots yarn collection.

The first stitches to learn

1. Slip knot

The slip knot is the starting loop used to place yarn on your hook. Learn to make it without pulling it too tight.

2. Chain stitch

The chain is the foundation of many crochet projects. Your goal is not speed; it is getting each loop reasonably consistent.

3. Slip stitch

A slip stitch is useful for joining, moving through a project and finishing certain shapes.

4. Single crochet

Single crochet is one of the most useful beginner stitches. Once you can make rows of single crochet, you already have a foundation for many small projects.

Why does crochet feel difficult at first?

Your hands are learning a new coordination pattern. You are watching yarn tension, hook position, loops and stitch placement at the same time. That awkward feeling is normal.

Most beginners improve faster when somebody can watch their hands and correct a small mistake immediately. That is one reason a hands-on crochet workshop can be easier than trying to decode every movement from a video.

What should you make first?

Do not start with a giant blanket. Choose a small project that gives you a visible result. A simple coaster, flower, bow, keychain or small pouch can be much more encouraging.

The goal of your first project is not perfection. It is to finish something and think, “I made that.”

How long does it take to learn crochet?

There is no fixed timeline. With regular short practice, many beginners can become comfortable with basic stitches surprisingly quickly. Your first few sessions are mainly about making your hands remember the movements.
